Curtis James Jackson III, an American rapper, actor, and businessman born on July 6, 1975, is better known by his stage name, 50 Cent. He has earned recognition as a “master of the delicate art of lyrical brevity” and is well-known for his impact on the hip-hop scene.
During the 1980s crack epidemic, Jackson, who grew up in Queens’ South Jamaica neighborhood, began peddling drugs at the age of 12. He later started pursuing a career in music, and in 2000, he produced the Columbia Records album Power of the Dollar.
The record was never made public since, sadly, he was killed just a few days before it was to be released. After releasing the mixtape Guess Who’s Coming, 50 Cent was discovered by Eminem in 2002.
Eminem and Dr. Dre helped 50 Cent become one of the best-selling rappers in the world and gain notoriety as the de facto leader of the East Coast hip-hop collective G-Unit. Dr. Dre produced 50 Cent’s first major-label album Get Rich or Die Tryin’.
He established G-Unit Records in 2003 and signed Tony Yayo, Young Buck, and Lloyd Banks as G-Unit members. The Massacre, 50 Cent’s second album, was released in 2005 and met with a similar level of commercial and critical success.
