Bernard Lawrence Madoff was an American financier that was convicted for the largest Ponzi scheme in history, worth about $64.8 billion. He was at one time chairman of the NASDAQ stock exchange. Madoff was born on April 29, 1938 in Queens. He graduated from Hofstra University in 1960 with a degree in Political science. In 1960, he founded Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC with a loan of 50,000 from his father-in-law. His firm helped create the NASDAQ.
Bernard L. Madoff Investment was the first firm to payout the “legal kickback”. Madoff served on the board of the Securities Industry Association, a precursor of SIFMA, and was chairman of its trading committee.
On December 11, 2008, Madoff was arrested and charged with securities fraud after his sons Mark and Andrew reported him to the Federal authorities.
On June 29, 2009, Madoff was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 150 years in federal prison.

In December 2019, he was hospitalized for kidney failure, his lawyer requested for compassionate release, but this was denied. Madoff died from natural causes on April 14, 2021, at the age of 81.
