Carleton Bates Varney was an American decorator, designer, lecturer, and author who lived from January 23, 1937, until July 14, 2022.

Varney was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, on January 23, 1937, and spent his formative years there. In 1958, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and fine arts from Ohio’s Oberlin College, and in 1969, he graduated from New York University with a master’s degree in fine arts education.

He received an Honorary Doctorate in 1987 from the West Virginian University of Charleston.

His art is built on his use of rich, vibrant multicolours and patterns, earning him the nickname “Mr. Color” as well. His design stance “emphasizes the use of bright colours and the rejection of all that is impractical, uncomfortable, and dreary.”

Three sons—Nicholas, a creator of exquisite jewellery, Seamus, and Sebastian, the CEO of Carleton V Ltd.—were born to Varney and his former spouse Suzanne.

One of his grandsons was named Bowie.

He lived in Palm Beach, Florida, and contributed to the Palm Beach Daily News, a local newspaper, as a columnist.
