George Michael was an English singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, with sales of over 120 million records worldwide. He is best known for “A Different Corner” and the Aretha Franklin duet “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” are some of his notable hits.

He was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou; on June 25, 1963, to a Greek immigrant. Michael started singing at the age of eight and by his teens, he was in a band ska. In 1981, he formed a duo group, Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley, and their first album Fantastic immediately went up to No. 1. Their second album Make It Big, peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Michael launched his solo career with the single “Last Christmas” in 1987, and he received Songwriter of the Year from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors for it. He went on to release more hit albums.

George Michael struggled with addiction and in 2011 he had a severe bout of pneumonia. On Christmas day, 2016 he was found dead in his apartment by his boyfriend. It was ruled he died from an enlarged heart.
