Pelé is a Brazilian former professional footballer who played as a forward. Easily regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, and labelled “the greatest” by FIFA, he was among the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century.

He set a record for scoring 1,279 goals in 1,363 games.

He was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940, his father was a footballer. Due to extreme poverty, he had to find a way of earning money so started playing football for amateur teams, by the time he was 14 years old, he was playing with adults.

At 16 years of age, Pele was already a top scorer which led him to be selected into the national team becoming the youngest goal scorer in Brazil.

At the age of 17, Pele was the youngest player to play in a World Cup final match in 1958 and assisted Brazil to win the 1958 World Cup. Pele retired from playing in 1978 but was a sports ambassador.

He was appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, in 1997, received an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II, and shared the prize of FIFA Player of the Century with Diego Maradona.

Is Pele Still Alive or Dead?

Pele is still alive but sadly not kicking. He has suffered several health issues over the years. In 2021, a tumour was surgically removed from his colon and has been in and out of the hospital. Pele is the most celebrated and recognizable football even at the age of 81.
