Pope Benedict XVI is a retired prelate of the Catholic church who served as the head of the church and the sovereign of the Vatican city state from 2005 until his resignation in 2013. He was elected head of the church following the death of Pope John Paul II and he is now referred to as “pope emeritus.”

Pope Benedict was born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger in Bavaria, Germany. He and his brother Georg Saint Michael Seminary in Traunstein and were both ordained in Freising on 29 June 1951.

Inspired by an Italian German priest, Romano Guardian, Pope Benedict studied at the University of Munich and became a professor at the University of Bonn in 1959.

Benedict XVI was elected the 265th pope at the age of 78 and became the oldest person to have been elected pope since Pope Clement XII. However, he had suffered from several health issues and had hoped to retire before becoming Pope.

Pope Benedict XVI resigned from the papacy on 28 February 2013, as a result of his advanced age, he was the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.

Is Pope Benedict Still Alive or Dead?

Pope Benedict is still alive although frail as any 95-year-old. In December 2020 it was announced had difficulty speaking.
