Ruby Nell Bridges Hall was born on September 8, 1954. She was one of six black children in New Orleans to pass the test that determined whether they could go to the all-white because, in 1954, the court ruling declared the process of separating schools for black children and white children unconstitutional.

Her father was reluctant but Lucille, her mother, convinced him.

Bridges describe that day “There was a large crowd of people outside of the school. They were throwing things and shouting.”

When Bridge got to the school, only one white teacher Barbara Henry agreed to teach her and this went on for a year.
