Sammy the Bull is the nickname of an American former mobster who became the underboss of the Gambino crime family. He agreed to testify against John Gotti and other mobsters in a deal in which he confessed to involvement in 19 murders.

Born Salvatore Gravano on March 12, 1945 to Sicilian parents, he joined a prominent street gang in Bensonhurst at the age of 13. He caught the attention of made men for how well he fought.

Sammy soon got noticed by Joe Colombo, Boss of the Colombo family. He started working for Joe and grew in ranks for his ruthlessness. He left the Colombo family due to a dispute and was initiated into the Gambino family in 1976. Furthermore, he soon became Gotti’s right-hand man when he took over the Gambino family.

In 1990 Sammy and Gotti were arrested, and the FBI got Sammy to become a government witness based on a leaked audio tape of Gotti bad-mouthing Sammy.

Sammy testified against Gotti and other mobsters in March 1992 and got a lesser sentence of five years in prison for 19 murders.

In 2002, Sammy the Bull was diagnosed with Graves disease. He was arrested and jailed for drug trafficking after he left the witness protection program. Sammy is alive and is a free man after serving 17 years in prison. He currently lives in Arizona and has a podcast and YouTube channel where he talks about the Mafia.
