From 1993 to 2001, Luke Howarth served as a sales representative for Sony Australia. Howarth joined his mother, father, and wife in their family’s pest control business in 2002.

Despite a 10% swing in his favor, Howarth was unsuccessful in the 2004 Queensland state election in the Sandgate electoral district against Gordon Nuttall, the incumbent Labor MP.

Howarth defeated sitting ALP member Yvette D’Ath, who had held the seat since the 2007 federal election, by winning the Petrie seat in the 2013 federal election with a 3.04% swing in his favor.
