Billy was born on May 9, 1949 to a German born classical pianist. This prompted him to take on piano lessons at the age of four. He joined a group named “The Echoes”, he performed with the group from 1965 to 1969 when the group disbanded.
In 1973, under Columbia Records released his signature hit “Piano Man”. He started gaining traction and his songwriting skills were in high demand. He wrote “Playing with My Friends: Bennett Sings the Blues” for Tony Bennett. In 1977, he won his first Grammy for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
