The Minnesota native was born Robert Allen Zimmerman to Ukraine-born Americans.
He formed several bands while in High School. Dylan graduated from the University of Minnesota where he studied American folk music.
In 1962, he legally changed his name to Robert Dylan. In 1963, he released his second album, most songs on the track were protest songs. The album was successful.
His songs were used for civil right movement rallies. His lyrics were raw and honest although some people did not like how raw his lyrics were.
In 1979, Dylan converted to Evangelical Christianity and went on to sing gospel songs. He released three gospel albums, which were met with mixed reviews.
