Dorothy Pearl Butler Gilliam is a journalist in America, she was the first African-American female journalist at the Washington Post. Butler was born on November 24, 1936, in Memphis, Tennessee, the U.S. to Adee Conklin Butler and Jessie Mae Norment Butler.
She studied at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Butler became a journalist for Memphis Tri-State Defender, which is a component of the Chicago Defender chain in 1957.
She served editor L.Alex Wilson. Butler had her master’s degree at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. When Butler was 24, The Washington Post hired her making her the first African American woman to be employed as a journalist by the paper.
She began working there in October 1961 on the City Desk as a reporter. Butler initiated writing prominent columns for the post, on politics, education and race in 1979, the column ran regularly for 19years in the Metro category.
She tutored journalism at American University and Howard University for a short period.
Butler had a husband Sam Gilliam, they separated in the 1980s. They have three kids
