Estelle Getty was an American actress best known for her portrayal of Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls. She was born on July 25, 1923, in New York and attended Seward Park High School.
Getty tried for 40 years to get a major role in Hollywood and finally got a break at the age of 60 as Sophia Petrillo on NBC’s new sitcom, The Golden Girls. She relied on the make-up team using wigs to look the part of an 80-year-old woman and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
She starred in other movies after The Golden Girls like Touched by an Angel, Tootsie, Mask and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.
Getty authored her autobiography, “If I Knew Then What I Know Now… So What?” She married Arthur Gettleman in 1947 and they had two children. Getty stayed married to Arthur till his death in 2004.
