Donahue was born on December 21, 1935 to a middle class, catholic family. He graduated from University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor in Business Administration in 1957.
He began his career as the production assistant at KYW radio and television. He quickly grew in ranks and was anchoring the CBS Evening News. His interpersonal skills made him a great anchorman and personalities were at ease sitting with him. He interviewed notable figures like, then- presidential candidate John Kennedy, human rights activist Malcolm X, Noam Chomsky, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazie.
The Phil Donahue Show came on air in 1970. It was a success and ran for 26 years. The final episode aired on September 13, 1996.
