Harry Belafonte is an American actor, singer and activist. He succeeded in popularizing the Trinbagonian Caribbean musical style with an international audience in the 1950s.

Born Harold George Bellanfanti Jr. on March 1, 1927, to Jamaican parents. He was inspired to become an actor in 1940 after going to the theatre where he met long-time friend Sidney Poitier.

Belafonte started his career singing in nightclubs, by 1953, he signed with RCA Victor and dropped his debut album “Calypso”. Selling over a million copies and peaking at no. 4 on Billboard, Caribbean music was widely accepted in the U.S. In 1959, Belafonte started his television show, Tonight With Belafonte, where he promoted black entertainers like South African singer Miriam Makeba.

Belafonte starred in a number of films from 1953 like Bright Road, Carmen Jones, Uptown Saturday Night, White Man’s Burden and BlacKkKlansman.

Belafonte is outspoken, he supported Martin Luther King. He financed and organized the the1963 March on Washington and was very outspoken against apartheid in South Africa.

In 1996, Harry Belafonte was diagnosed with prostate cancer and he was successfully treated. Belafonte is alive, although he has not made any recent public appearance his daughter maintains he is in good health at 95 years.
