Pryor was born on December 1, 1940, to an alcoholic mother, he was raised by his grandmother in a brothel she owned. In 1963, he moved to New York where he started performing in clubs alongside Bob Dylan and Woody Allen.
In the 1970s, Pryor started writing for television shows like Sanford and Son, The Flip Wilson Show and Lily Tomlin Special. He also featured in some films such as Lady Sings the Blues, The Mack, Car Wash and The Muppet Movie.
Pryor was the first black person to host the Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 1975. He was also the first black actor to earn a million dollars for a single film.
Pryor was married seven times to five women and had seven children, one is an actress and comedian, Rain Pryor.

In 1986, Richard Pryor was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, his health declined as the years went by. On December 10, 2005, he had a heart attack and died. He was cremated, and his ashes were scattered in the bay at Hana, Hawaii in 2019.
