John Amos is an American actor known for his role as James Evans, Sr., on the CBS television series Good Times and Coming to America. Amos was born on December 27, 1939. He attended Colorado State University where he majored in sociology.
Amos was a free agent with the American Football League’s Denver Broncos in 1964 and played till 1967. His first major acting role was Gordy Howard, the weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He got the role on the Good Times and it aired from 1974 to 1979. He also got the role of the older Kunta Kinte in the acclaimed Roots which he was nominated for an Emmy.
Amos starred in several feature films like Let’s Do It Again, Vanishing Point, The President’s Plane Is Missing, Coming to America, Two Evil Eyes, and Die Hard 2.
Amos was married twice and he has two children. Amos was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2020.
