Thomas Earl Petty was born on October 20, 1950. He was inspired by Elvis Presley and wanted to be a singer. In 1979, Petty formed the band “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers” in 1976 and dropped their singles “American Girl” and “Breakdown” which peaked at No. 40 on the chart.
The band soon gained fame in the U.S and U.K. By 1988, Petty joined Bob Dylan to form the “Traveling Wilburys”. They performed together until 1989, when Petty went solo. He released his first album, Full Moon Fever in 1989 which was a hit.
In 1991, the band “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers” reformed and sold over ten million records and received the diamond certification by the RIAA for their single, “Something in the Air”.
Petty dabbled into acting, he featured in 1997 film, The Postman, The Simpsons and King of the Hill.

Petty was found unresponsive at his home on October 2, 2017, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. He died two weeks short of his 67th birthday of cardiac arrest.
