He was an overweight child, at his heaviest he was 122kg. He graduated from Florida State University.
He moved to Los Angeles after graduation and wanted to lose weight but he noticed most fitness studios worked more with clients that were already fit. This prompted Simmons to develop an interest in fitness which helped him to lose 56kg.
Simmons wanted to help real people with their weight problems so he opened a gym.
He appeared in several talk shows, and with his flamboyant and positive attitude, he became a toast for media gurus who wanted to feature him on their shows and sitcoms.

Richard Simmons decided to stay away from public appearances in 2014. There were speculations from being held hostage in his house to undergoing gender reassignment.
In 2016, he closed his fitness gyms without prior notice which further fueled the conspiracy theories about his disappearance.
We may never really know why Simmons retreated from the public but we can only hope he is doing well.
