Shirley was known for her brown curly hair and dimpled smile. She was a fan favourite. She continued to feature in movies until 1950 when she announced her retirement from acting. She moved to a career in radio hosting a show Junior Miss.
Shirley was used to advertise Ideal Toy and Novelty Company, they made dolls wearing polka dot dresses from Stand Up and Cheer! She became one of the most popular celebrity to endorse merchandise for children and adults.
Shirley was interested in politics, she served as the United States Ambassador to Ghana in 1974 and the United States Ambassador to Czechoslovakia in 1989.
She also served as the first female Chief of Protocol of the United States.
