The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program, named after Major-General Georges P. Vanier, the country’s first francophone governor general, assists Canadian universities in attracting highly skilled doctorate candidates.

Valued at $50,000 annually for three years while pursuing a doctorate, it takes into account three equally weighted selection criteria: leadership (potential and shown competence), research potential, and academic excellence.

Opening Date

The long-awaited Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program will be opened in mid-June 2024.

Application Process

Applications can be started in two different methods. One of two things takes place: either the student notifies the graduate studies faculty at the chosen university that they intend to apply to the Vanier CGS program, or the university contacts the desired candidate to start the nomination process.

  • The student uses the ResearchNet application system to create their application and submits it to the nominating university by the internal deadline that is set in ResearchNet by the nominating institution.
  • The internal candidate selection procedure is carried out by the nominating organization.
  • By November 1, 2023, at 20:00 Eastern Time, the nominated institution submits proposed nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat).
  • The review procedure is managed by the Secretariat. The suggestions are given to the Tri-agency Programs (TAP) Steering Committee by the Secretariat.
  • The Vanier CGS program’s final choices are approved and endorsed by the TAP Steering Committee.
  • In April 2024, the selected candidates receive notification of the competition outcomes.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must have been granted a Vanier CGS quotaFootnote1 and be proposed by just one Canadian University.
  • Applicants must be pursuing their first doctorate (including dual programs with a documented and substantial research component, such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, or MBA/PhD).
  • Aim to pursue full-time doctoral (or joint graduate research program, such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, or MBA/PhD) studies and research at the nominating institution in the summer semester or the academic year after the results are announced; for joint graduate research programs, funding is only available for the PhD portion of the program.
  • As of May 1, 2024, you must have finished no more than 20 months of full-time coursework toward your doctorate; the doctorate program starts after a master’s degree is completed.
  • Have finished no more than 32 months of full-time study toward your PhD (i.e., direct enrollment from bachelor’s degree into joint graduate research program, without first earning master’s degree).

Eligible Programs of Study for Scholarship

To graduate from an eligible doctoral program, one must complete a substantial amount of research leading to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that has undergone merit/expert review at the institutional level.

Professional degree-granting joint graduate research programs (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD) and clinically-focused programs of study (e.g., clinical psychology) are eligible programs if they feature a substantial independent research component, as previously mentioned.

Benefits

Successful students will receive a $ 50,000 award every year for three years.

The opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. at the applicant’s preferred Canadian institution will be offered. Depending on the applicant’s leadership abilities, research plan, and academic record, his or her studies may receive full or partial funding.

How To Apply
