Father Stu is the nickname of Stuart Ignatius Long who was an American boxer and Catholic priest. He was born on July 26, 1963. Father Stu started playing football and boxing at College and won the Golden Gloves in 1985, shortly before graduating with a degree in English Literature.

Father Stu had a near death experience in 1992 when he had a car accident. He was placed in an induced coma and was not expected to survive. Luckily, he survived and this converted him to a Christian.

He had a calling to priesthood in 1997, he was sent to Mt. Angel Seminary. While in the seminary, he was diagnosed with inclusion body myositis, a rare progressive muscle disorder. Father Stu was ordained a priest in 2007, at the Cathedral of Saint Helena. During his ordination, he gave this acceptance speech, “I stand before you as a broken man. Barring a miracle, I’m going to die from this disease, but I carry it for the cross of Christ, and we can all carry our crosses.”

Is Father Stu Still Alive or Dead?

Father Stu continued to serve as a priest despite his condition and difficulties. In 2010, he was moved to a care facility where he still ministered and celebrated mass with the assistance of his friends. He died on June 9, 2014 at the age of 50. His biopic, Father Stu was released in 2022.
