Freddie Mercury was a British singer and songwriter. He was also the lead singer of the rock band Queen which was popular in the 1970s and 80s. Described as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music, Mercury was the writer of some of Queen’s greatest hits.

Born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946, to the British protectorate of Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania). He spent his childhood in India and began taking piano lessons at the age of eight and formed a rock group, the “Hectics” at the age of twelve. In 1964, Freddie and his family moved to England and by 1970, he partnered with some friends and formed the band, Queen.

Freddie was known for his high-pitched singing voice, he could belt up to tenor high and so as low F bass. He wore theatrical styles and sometimes wore big ball gowns on stage. He wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Somebody to Love”, “We Are the Champions”, “Don’t Stop Me Now” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”.

In 1987, Freddie Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS, and made his final public appearance in 1990. On 24 November 1991, he died from AIDS complications at the age 45. The outer walls of Garden Lodge in Logan Place became a memorial to Mercury where his fan paid tributes to him until 2017.
