Gene Wilder was an American actor, comedian, writer, and filmmaker. He is known mainly for his comedic roles, but also for his portrayal of Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. He also worked with fellow actor Mel Brooks and produced several films together like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.
Jerome Silberman was born on June 11, 1933. Eight-year-old Wilder started performing to make his sick mother laugh. His first stage performance was in the production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Julie. Wilder went on to attend the University of Iowa where he graduated with a degree in theatre Arts.
Wilder’s film debut was a minor role in Bonnie and Clyde and his first major role was in The Producers. The film was a huge success and Wilder was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Wilder went on to collaborate with notable actors like Richard Pryor, Kelvin Spacy, Gilda Radner, Sidney Poitier and Harrison Ford. He eventually retired in 2003.

Gene Wilder was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2013 and sadly passed away three years later at his Stamford home listening to his favorite song, “Over the Rainbow”.
