Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an American professional baseball player. He was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. Robinson defied colour bias.

He was born on January 31, 1919, into a family of sharecroppers in Georgia. His athletics skills were recognized in high school. Robinson’s brother Mack was also an athlete and silver medalist in the 1936 Olympics. Jack played football, basketball, track, and baseball.

In 1945, Robinson was invited to play for the Kansas City Monarchs, to be paid $400 per month. He accepted the offer but he did not enjoy playing with the team. On October 23, 1945, Robinson signed the Montreal Royals and became the first black baseball player in the International League since the 1880s.

In 1947, the Dodgers called Robinson up, he became the first player since 1884 to openly break the major league baseball colour line. In 1957, Robinson decided to retire.

In 1968, he suffered a heart attack, and complications from heart disease weakened Robinson. On October 24, 1972, Robinson died of a heart attack at the age of 53.
