Born Caryn Elaine Johnson on November 13, 1955, she got her stage name “Whoopi” from a whoopee cushion. She made her first appearance in Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away in 1982. In 1985, she got a major role in The Color Purple and was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Actress. In 1990, she starred alongside Demi Moore in the film Ghost and won her Oscar becoming the second Black woman to win an Academy Award. By 1992, Goldberg was the highest paying actress.
Goldberg has starred in 29 films grossing $1.3 billion in the U.S. and Canada. She has worked on Toy Story 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Tyler Perry’s film Nobody’s Fool.
