Born James Scott Bumgarner on April 7, 1928, in Denver. He enlisted in the California Army National Guard, serving during the Korean War. His debut screen appearance was on The Girl He Left Behind in 1956. He co-starred with the legendary Marlon Brando in the movie Sayonara.
In 1957, he got the role of Bret Maverick in the Western series Maverick which aired till 1960. In the 1960s, he was one of the busiest actors in Hollywood starring alongside; Natalie Wood, Audrey Hepburn, Tony Randal, Doris Day and Steve McQueen.
In 1964, he created his production company, Cherokee Productions. He produced comedic films like The Art of Love, Duel at Diablo and Support Your Local Sheriff!
Garner tied the knot with Lois Josephine Fleischman Clarke in 1956 after knowing her for 14 days. They had a daughter Greta together.
