Abagnale’s preys were private citizens and small-scale companies. However, in the late 1970s, he became popular for making a variety of victimless workplace fraud claims, many of which are now questioned.

In 1980, Abagnale co-wrote Catch Me If You Can, his autobiography, which developed a story around these allegedly victimless frauds.

Leonardo DiCaprio played Abagnale in Steven Spielberg’s 2002 film adaptation of the same name, which was later based on the book. Additionally, he has published four other works.

Abagnale is the owner of the consulting company Abagnale & Associates.
