Gary Leon Ridgway is an American serial killer. He is known as the “Green River Killer” and convicted for 49 separate murders which makes him the second most prolific serial killer in United States history.
Ridgway was born on February 18, 1949. He was violent from a young age, stabbing a boy at the age of 16. He joined the United States Navy in 1969 and was known to always patronize prostitute in Vietnam. After the war, his wife reported he continued to patronize prostitute and had an insatiable sexual appetite.
His killing spree started in the 1980s, and it is believed he killed over 70 women mainly sex workers and young runaway. It is believed he strangled his victims and would have sexual intercourse with the corpse.
On November 30, 2001, he was arrested for the murder of four women based on DNA evidence, and he confessed to his other victims to avoid the death penalty.
On December 18, 2003, he was sentenced to 48 life sentences with no possibility of parole. He was also sentenced to an additional 10 years for tampering with evidence for each of the 48 victims, adding a total of 480 years to his sentence.
