Willie Mays is a former center fielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) who played in the National League (NL) between 1951 and 1973. He played for the New York/San Francisco Giants and New York Mets. He was selected a record 24 times as an All-star and 12 times Gold Glove Award.

Born on May 6, 1931, Mays was a three-sport star, playing basketball, football and baseball. He started playing professional baseball at Chattanooga Choo-Choos a minor league team in 1948. He went on to Birmingham Black Barons. He eventually became a major-leaguer playing for the New York Giants in 1951 and ended the season as Rookie of the Year.

In 1952, he was drafted into the Army where he served for two years. Mays won the 1954 World Series with the Giants. He retired in 1973 from the New York Mets. He became a national hero and was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. This baseball icon is ranked second on the “List of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players”, behind only Babe Ruth. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in 2015.
