The Monkees were an American rock and pop band, formed in Los Angeles in 1966. They were popular for international hits like “Last Train to Clarksville”, “I’m a Believer”, “A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You”, “Pleasant Valley Sunday”, and “Daydream Believer”.

The band sold over 75 million records worldwide making them one of the biggest-selling groups of all time.

The group was made up of Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Davy Jones. Bob Rafelson developed the initial idea of making a film with an American band in 1962.

He tried for years to get this done with an existing American band but it was not possible so he decided to form a new band. Davy Jones was an actor and accepted to join the band, Rafelson had to audition over 500 people to get the remaining three members.

The Monkees became a pop sensation with the launch of the situation comedy series, Monkees which was on air from 1966 to 1968. The band members soon began to pursue individual projects and the band broke up in 1970.
