Payne was born on July 7, 1968 in the Harlem area of New York City. He attended Pennsauken High School in Pennsauken Township, New Jersey. He got his first major role on The Cosby Show. He was on the show for two seasons portraying Charmaine’s boyfriend, Lance Rodman. He also featured in some episodes of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and Malcolm & Eddie.
In 1994, he got the role of Jason Alexander in the 1994 drama film Jason’s Lyric, this was his first major film. He went on to star in Vampire in Brooklyn, Double Platinum, and The Perfect Storm.
In 2006, he starred on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, which aired from 2006 to 2012 and in 2018, he reprised his role from House of Payne on The Paynes.
