Aretha Franklin was born on March 25, 1942. Her father was a Baptist minister and her mother was a vocalist. Aretha started singing in church, at the age of 12, her father started taking her on the road to perform in various churches.
At 16, she went on tour with Dr. Martin Luther King and also sang at his funeral.
In 1960, Aretha signed with Columbia Records. By 1969, Aretha was “the most successful singer in the nation”. She was nominated and won several Grammy awards.
Franklin made international headlines for performing My Country, ‘Tis of Thee at President Obama’s inauguration.
Aretha’s last public performance was in New York City during Elton John’s 25th anniversary for the Elton John AIDS Foundation on November 7, 2017.

Aretha Franklin started having health issues in 2011, she had to undergo surgery. In May, 2013, she canceled scheduled shows due to undisclosed illness. By 2018, she took ill again.
It was reported she was gravely ill and was in hospice care. The Queen of Soul died on August 16, 2018, aged 76.
