The actor was born on March 26, 1934, to Jewish parents in Brooklyn. He started taking acting classes at the age of 10.
Arkin starred in his first screen appearance in the 1966 comedy, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming and received an Academy and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor.
He directed his first movie in 1969, People Soup and he was nominated for Best Director at the 1969 Oscars.
Arkin has been able to evolve to make himself relevant each decade, in 2003, he received a Primetime award for the drama, The Pentagon Papers. In 2006, he was the sixth oldest winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie Little Miss Sunshine.
